Second STAMP Workshop

March 26-28, 2013

STAMP is a new accident causality model based on systems theory and systems
thinking described in Nancy Leveson’s new book “Engineering a Safer World.”
STAMP accounts for the new causal factors associated with software,
human-decision making, new technology, social and organizational design,
and increasing complexity. STPA is a powerful new hazard analysis technique
based on STAMP while CAST is the equivalent for accident/incident analysis.

After the success of the first workshop, we have decided to hold a second
one. The format for the second workshop will expand on the first and have
advanced tutorials, birds of a feather sharing among those in the same
industry, presentations of experiences/lessons learned/challenges in using
STPA/CAST, research papers, and perhaps some panels. Unless there is
expressed interest, there will not be another beginner’s tutorial this time.

*Due dates*:

Dec. 1: proposals or suggestions for tutorials and other types of sessions

            Interest in making a presentation

Other types of sessions you would like to lead or participate in

Extended abstract (2-3 pages) for a research paper

Additional suggestions for the meeting or other ways you might
like to participate.

*Some Possible Topics for Presentations (not limited to these)*:

· Experiences using STPA and CAST

· Safety-guided design using STPA

· Accident analyses

· Certification and regulatory issues

· Evaluations and comparisons with traditional techniques

· Risk management and identifying leading indicators

· Applications to security

· Implications of STAMP and STPA for integrated modular avionics,
interoperability, cyber warfare and cybersecurity, etc.

· Tools, processes, and other support for analysis and design using
STPA and CAST

· Management and adoption experiences or challenges

*Program*: A detailed program will be available January 15. We ask that you
“register” interest in attending (and provide information about what you
would like to have at the workshop) in order to make sure this year we have
adequate facilities. Go to
http://psas.scripts.mit.edu/home/2nd-stampstpa-workshop-2013/

*Location*: At or near MIT

*Cost*: To be determined. We are trying to make the sessions free again.
There will be an optional charge for a reception.
