I think this says it all and is a good poster for the office wall :-) 

I am not sure the Victorians were this bad but they certainly had a sense of
adventure.  In any event risk assessment in the 19th Century was very
different to modern times. Though sometimes I think sometimes we may have
thrown the baby out with the bath water.
