Safety-critical Systems Club seminar "Successful Safety Management", London, 26th June 2014

How should safety be managed? Is it just another system property to be managed, along with many others, during development, operations and decommissioning? Or is safety management something special? Some sectors have introduced regulations and/or guidelines in an attempt to standardize the way that safety should be managed. Some have introduced formal safety management systems (SMS). All of these efforts are assumed to work, but sometimes may lead to unintended and unexpected behaviours.
What can we all learn from these disparate approaches? Do staff in such organisations "buy-in" to the safety management policies and procedures? What can be done to create a genuine safety culture within a workforce?
The speakers will illustrate their approaches to implementing safety management within the constraints of their business. What is considered effective management and best practice will be highlighted.
