As well as the discussion at SSS'14, there will be a workshop on the Effectiveness of Safety
Standards at EDCC in Newcastle in May 2014. Preliminary info at http://www.idt.mdh.se/AESSCS_2014/

I have a one-liner (make that three-liner) about the effectiveness of safety standards. I am
involved in a major standardisation project for a new technology (this is not a unique identifier
:-) ) in which everybody pays substantial lip service to functional safety but spat copiously on a
subproject for risk analysis. Telling them that as far as the IEC is concerned, functional safety
*is* risk analysis and then assessment (see IEC Guide 51) did not appear to help.
