[SystemSafety] The fall of Rome and the ascendancy of ego and bluster

I think that's true for the uninvolved. But if you are involved or
responsible you never forget and it changes you forever. Another way of
turning an accident into an enduring lesson is to make it a legend and put
it into the language. The stories of Bhopal and Chernobyl as presented in
the literature are too clinical. They need to be reconstructed with real
names, dates, people, dialogue, misery and death. Accompanied by pictures of
what birth deformity looks like. I once saw a man who had caustic soda
splashed in his face. This was 1976. I'll never forget that image. Think
about it regularly.
While working in Michigan I attended the safety meeting with an invited
speaker. He was a Michigan State trooper who told us how he'd recently
attended an horrific crash that killed three teenagers. He held one of them
in his arms as she bled out in the snow. I think everyone in that meeting
slowed down for the rest of their natural lives.

Transposed to safety, it is the beauty of the dysfunction. Everybody
remember the accident but forget the lessons learned...

That's the wonderful thing about poetry, it can mean whatever you want it to
mean. The wisdom is that Kent (from King Lear) was claiming to be a
Protestant. Though no one is sure. In this paragraph, Shakespeare uses
diversion, surprise, where he breaks the train of thought and points his
audience toward another window. Audiences love surprise. It delights and
sparks images in the mind, creative thought. This might explain why
Shakespeare has endured for 400 years, though his language is beautiful,
it's not what he said that you remember, it's what you visualised while he
was saying it. I gave a presentation on risk in 2004. It featured me holding
a very large and very live crab that was trying to get its pincers on my
wrist and kill me. Years later, people comment about that presentation.
They've probably forgotten what I said but they remembered the crab.

Derek
I don't want your black arm band. I prefer to reflect on the things that we
know that work. For me it's mostly around the models that help us understand
and then synthesise. Some of them are enduring. My list includes:
- The relational model. At the core of most information systems.
- The finite state model. At the core of most control systems.
- The object oriented model at the core of just about any well-designed
system.
These models have proved their integrity, purely by endurance.
Forget about Barry and think about William whose words have endured for 400
years:
"I do profess to be no less than I seem; to serve him truly that will put me
in trust: to love him that is honest; to converse with him that is wise, and
says little; to fear judgment; to fight when I cannot choose; and to eat no
fish."
Onward. Upward!!
Cheers
Les

All,

I have updated my thinking on the history of empirical software
engineering:
