This is not exactly a new subject. One could check out the following philosophical treatises, some
of them from before so-called cognitive robotics:

Love and its Place in Nature, Jonathan Lear, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1990.
Open Minded: Working out the Logic of the Soul, Jonathan Lear, Harvard U.P., 1998.
The Structure of Emotions: Investigations in Cognitive Philosophy, Robert M. Gordon, Cambridge U.P.,
1987.
Philosophy and the Emotions, ed. Anthony Hatzimoysis, Cambridge U.P., 2003

as well as

Philosophers Explore The Matrix, ed. Christopher Grau, Oxford U.P., 2005. There are serious
philosophers arguing that this is in fact the way things are now, for example Nick Bostrom at
http://www.simulation-argument.com/simulation.html , an article published in a reputable
philosophical journal in 2003.
