Thierry, it has been necessary for decades and we have tried and failed for decades to improve it.

As a voter who is wavering on the side of remain, it has been difficult talking to my peers who are totally disillusioned by the experience of joining the 'Common Market' as it was termed at the time we joined. The general opinion amongst my 50-70 year old friends can probably be summed up as follows.

The southern block of countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece) benefit too much from money from the north to ever agree to change which would result in them getting less. The French attitude to anything Britain suggests was set by de Gaulle and has never changed. (Non!). The EU keeps adding more and more countries from the eastern bloc which is perceived as only adding to our problems as they offer no economic benefit. The EU is run by unelected officials and Britain is losing control of its laws as we are dictated to by Brussels.

I accept that some members will react badly if the vote is to leave, but I believe it will have a domino effect, with other disillusioned countries following suit. If we do vote to leave then the blame will lie with the intransigence of the original dominant members, particularly (as perceived on this island) France and Germany.

I join Peter in asking our British friends to remain in the Union, and help us improve it from the inside, if necessary. This is not about money, this is about our common future.
We can't vote for them, but if Great Britain does not remain in the Union, many countries inside the Union will react like a scorned spouse in a divorce. The aftermath will be ugly for all concerned, and the concerned are many more than the subjects of HM the Queen.

Best regards,
Thierry Coq

Actually, not so off topic as it may seem. Lots of what we do depends on pan-European cooperation, from air traffic services to standards for self-driving and electric vehicles, commercial aircraft, and rail.

Er, let's forget the fine words and pretend decorum - I am scared shitless. I'm nearly 65 and this is the biggest crisis I have ever experienced in two decades in the UK, two in the US and two in Germany. (If I were 10 years older, as some of my distinguished colleagues and friends are, it would have been WWII.)

I can't vote. If you can, please, please do, and take all your friends with you to the polling station.
