5th International Workshop on Next Generation of System Assurance Approaches
for Safety-Critical Systems

Trondheim, Norway, September 20th, 2016

In conjunction with the International Conference on Computer Safety,
Reliability and Security, SAFECOMP

Deadline extended to May 26th, 2016

Safety-critical systems engineering requires the execution of laborious and
expensive assurance and certification activities so that the systems are
allowed to operate. The characteristics of these systems regularly evolve,
which also results in a growth of their complexity and size. Safety-critical
systems are currently moving towards e.g. systems of systems and
cyber-physical systems, and the use of technologies related to software,
networking, standard architectures, and mixed-criticality is increasing. In
addition, the regulatory needs are changing, including modifications to the
applicable standards. There is a growing interest in the use of goal-based
standards and assurance cases for system certification, and in jointly
addressing safety and security aspects. All the above characteristics
require that system assurance practices also evolve, take further quality
concerns into account (e.g., security and privacy), and analyse the
relationships between the concerns. Practitioners need new approaches that
allow them to address present and future system assurance needs and
contribute to system assurance cost-effectiveness, including compliance
assessment, product reuse, incremental and compositional certification, and
evidence management.

The SASSUR workshop is intended to explore new ideas to improve system
assurance and certification of safety-critical systems. In particular,
SASSUR will provide a forum for thematic presentations and in-depth
discussions about the alignment of standards and system characteristics,
specification of assurance cases, safety evidence management, and reuse of
assurance information, in a way that makes assurance and certification more
cost-effective, precise, and scalable.
